Progressing Towards an interdependent, yet ‘Self-reliant Nation’

September 20, 2023

India is progressing towards becoming the manufacturing hub of the world. To support these goals of the nation, the government has introduced the Make in India initiative.

Why Make in India?

  1. The initiative seeks to boost the manufacturing sector of the country.
  2. Enables the development of linked ecosystems to support the growth of the economy.
  3. Potential for strengthening the domestic manufacturing capabilities to cater to global demands.
  4. Enables access of manufacturers to production linked incentives and government procurement processes.
  5. Provides a platform for foreign entities for doing business in India.

The initiative recognizes the interplay of globalization and manufacturing in encouraging and supporting the growth of various manufacturing and service sectors. An important step taken by the government is the introduction of the production linked incentive schemes in each sector to encourage domestic manufacturing through fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.

With the adoption of the initiative and various sector specific policies and schemes introduced to cater to the unique requirements, India is steadily progressing towards its goal of becoming the manufacturing hub to cater to the domestic as well as global demand. In this research paper we discuss the impact of the initiative on the manufacturing sector, policy reforms and complementary schemes adopted to support the implementation of the initiative, development of linked eco-systems, mechanism for setting up businesses in India, discussion on some key sectors and the adoption of the initiative in such sectors. Our research paper on Doing Business in India discusses the tax considerations for entities to enter Indian markets. We have also identified certain challenges faced by the industry in implementing the initiative with our inputs on the way forward for the industry.
